People know that we have a huge environmental issue. Global warming is melting Antarctica and that melted ice is causing our water levels to rise. By the end of the century, parts of the East Coast, USA will be completely underwater, including Hampton Virginia, and Chesapeake Virginia. According to Greta Thunberg, by the year 2040, the average temperature outside will increase by 1.5 °C. So, let us say that the average temperature year-round is 75 °F, then by the year 2040, the average temperature outside will be 109.7 °F. I do not think that this is due to a lack of care for the environment, I believe that this is due to lack of knowledge.
15 out of 29 kids in one of my classes said that they cared about the environment, but ten kids said that they didn’t believe in Global Warming. When I tell people that by the year 2040, the average temperature will be 109.7 °F, most of my classmates tell me that that is impossible and that the Earth cannot warm up that quickly. One person told me that once, experts told people that there would be an ice age by the year 2000. The experts were wrong, obviously. They said that is why they don’t believe in climate change/global warming. They feel that experts don’t really what is going on with the environment. Now, we have a lot of better technology. I feel like these people don’t know the dangers of global warming because nobody taught them about it.
Another concern that I have is the dangers of plastic. To understand what I mean about the dangers of plastic, one must first understand what plastic is. Plastic is a moldable, man-made material that is made of artificial, and semi-artificial materials. When plastic is dumped into our oceans, it actually decomposes quicker, due to the environmental conditions out there. Plastic releases many chemicals when it decomposes, including bisphenol A. Bisphenol A, also known as BPA, mimics estrogen. If one’s body contains too much estrogen or estrogen-like substances, one can get extremely sick. We eat the fish that swam in that contaminated water. If Antarctica melts sea levels will rise. The cities that will be underwater contain toxic chemicals as well. If these chemicals mix with the chemicals released by decomposed plastic, then humans will no longer be able to eat seafood and maybe not even be able to drink that water. From what I have learned myself, not many people realize this.
My belief, as I have repeatedly stated, is that our environmental issue is due to a lack of knowledge on the subject, and I would like to propose a solution to this problem. The solution is education. I think that there will be many children who after learning about our problems, will decide to try and fix or at least start to fix this enormous issue. Adults tell me that they know it is their fault that our planet is now a dump and that it is up to us to change our circumstances. The first step to doing that is education.
